The village, activities and surrounding areas
Thollon-Les-Memises is a small picturesque village at about 1000 metres altitude with a summer population of a few hundred burgeoning to several thousand during the winter sports season. The village ski station is less than 100 metres from the chalet and there is a gondola lift (upgraded for the 2013/14 season) to the ski area station at about 1600 metres altitude. The ski area itself is quite small with about 50km of pistes and a combination of drag and chair lifts rising to about 1900 metres. It is ideal for family skiing with affordable lift prices as well as the chance to ski in good snow with beautiful views of expansive blue lake on clear days below.
Back in the village there is a good choice of bars and restaurants as well as some small shops for everyday essentials. A 10 minute walk or two minute drive down the hill take you to the village bakery as well as a cheese and yoghurt shop which makes much of its own produce courtesy of the local cow population. There is also a larger Spar supermarket and cashpoint.
Evian is just 15 minutes drive down the mountain where there is lakeside shopping and dining as well as swimming (including a large swimming complex with pools and lake swimming) and sailing. From Evian there is a ferry directly across the lake to Lausanne. The drive to Montreux is about 30 minutes. From Thollon-Les-Memises via the outskirts of Evian you can also reach the Porte du Soliel skiing area including resorts such as Chatel and Les Gets in about 45 minutes. The Mont Blanc tunnel is about 90 minutes away and Italy beyond. In the immediate surround areas you can criss-cross beyond the Swiss and French borders for mountain walks, lake swimming and find activity centres that offer high wires and all sort of fun pursuits for the adventurous.
